Course Content

This comprehensive one day fire safety training course, to accompany the recently published Fire Safety in Blocks of Flats Guide, covers fire risk assessment, fire safety design principles, relevant legislation, Fire Safety Orders, fire protection measures, alarm systems and on-going management control within the challenging environment of ensuring fire safety within large residential blocks. This course is ideal for all those involved in the management, assessment and enforcement of fire safety in purpose built blocks of flats, and gives delegates and opportunity to receive training and guidance direct from the author of this guide.

Session 1

  • Introduction and background to the development and scope of the new guide.
  • The risk of fire - and the factors influencing the likelihood of a fire in a block of flats.
  • Fire safety design principles for blocks of flats - including benchmarking, “stay put” principle and evacuation strategy.

Session 2:

  • The law governing fire safety in blocks of flats - who is the “responsible person”, the duties imposed under the Fire Safety Order, the scope and overlap of legislation and the enforcement of the legislation under the FSO and Housing Act.
  • The requirement for a fire risk assessment - the types of fire risk assessment and their scope.
  • The risk assessment process and action plan.
  • The management of fire risk in blocks of flats - including preventing fires, common fire hazards and suitable control measures to reduce the risk.

Session 3:

  • Fire protection measures in blocks of flats - compartmentation, means of escape, smoke control, emergency lighting, signs and notices, fire extinguishers.
  • Fire detection and alarm systems in blocks of flats and sheltered accommodation.
  • The management of fire safety in blocks of flats - ongoing management control, “zero tolerance” and “managed use” policies, testing and maintenance requirements, engaging with residents.

Session 4:

  • Case studies
  • Q&A session - opportunity for delegates to raise specific issues on the guide and other relevant fire safety matters.
